Harini Amarasuriya the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

Harini Amarasuriya has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka by the newly elected president Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Sri Lanka has made a significant political change by appointing Harini Amarasuriya as the country’s new Prime Minister. She is the 16th Prime Minister and the third woman to hold the post. Previously PM post was held by two strong ladies Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Harini Amarasuriya is a member of the National People’s Power (NPP) Party. Furthermore, she is known for her contributions to education and social justice. She has become the first educationist-politician to lead a government. Moreover, she intends to change the image and destiny of Sri Lanka. Moreover, she has done a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. After education, Harini Amarasuriya has been a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the Open University of Sri Lanka. She has been actively involved in research and teaching, with a focus on development, social policy, and the sociology of youth. Moreover, she has published widely in these fields. Her famous book is Gender and Poverty in Selected Locations in Sri Lanka.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake the new President of Sri Lanka

Anura Kumara Dissanayake is a Sri Lankan leftist leader. He was born on 24 November 1968. Furthermore, he is the leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a party with Marxist ideology. He started his journey in politics by joining JVP in 1987 and became an MP for the first time in 2000. He also worked as a minister. Furthermore, in 2014 he became the leader of JVP. Moreover, he is known as a harsh critic, who has been questioning the policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Government of Sri Lanka. Dissanayake was born into a poor family. His father was a labourer. Therefore, Dissanayake is also known as a leader who raises his voice in favour of the people with low income.

It is noteworthy that in the year 2022, after massive protests, Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to step down from the post of President. A few days later, Parliament elected Wickremesinghe as the new President. From 2022 the country is facing a massive economic crisis. Now Anura Kumara is the new President of Sri Lanka. This is the first time that a leftist leader is the President of Sri Lanka. Anura took oath on the 23rd of September 2024. Afterwards, he appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
