On January 13, after returning from China, Muizzu said that Maldives is not the backyard of any particular country and no one can threaten it. Instead of poor-quality medicines from India, we will import medicines from Europe and America. This statement of Muizzu was in the context of India. Opposition leaders strongly attacked his statements.

    Clashes in Maldives Parliament

MPs from pro-government parties and opposition members came face to face over the approval of four members in Muizzu’s cabinet. Maldives Parliament approves only one cabinet member out of four.

According to local media reports, parliament voted to refuse to sanction Housing Minister Ali Haider Ahmed, Islamic Minister Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. At the same time, Economic Minister Mohammad Sayeed narrowly escaped and was approved. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made the formal request for approval of his cabinet on November 20, two days after taking office.

Parliament was scheduled to vote on the cabinet on December 18, but the original report of the government monitoring committee was rejected. Parliament convened a meeting on Sunday to vote on the committee’s new report, which was passed on 30 December. But just before Sunday’s vote, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced parliamentary immunity for four members of Muizzu’s cabinet. Decided to stop the clearance and issued a three-line red whip against them. MDP has the majority in Parliament.

The move triggered clashes between pro-government and opposition MPs, disrupting the parliamentary sitting proceedings. The long-pending vote finally took place on Monday afternoon and Parliament rejected Haider, Shaheem and Usham. Haider was rejected by a vote of 46-24. Usham was rejected by a vote of 44-24 and Shaheem by 31-30. However, Sayeed narrowly got approval with a vote of 37-32.

There is increasing pressure on Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, who came to power by spewing anti-India venom, to apologize to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The MDP, which holds the majority in the Parliament of Maldives and serves as the main opposition party, has stated that if Muizzoo fails to issue an apology for his anti-India remarks, then they may introduce an impeachment motion against him in the Parliament.

Apart from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Saleh’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), other opposition parties are also building pressure on Muizzu to apologize to India. Sources associated with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) claimed on Monday that they have collected the signatures of all MPs needed for a no-confidence motion against Muizzu. Now if Muizzu does not apologize, he will have to lose his post.

Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim has said that the way Muizzu has made indirect verbal attacks against India. Muizzu’s statement after returning from a China trip is unacceptable. Moreover, he will have to apologize to India for this.

There are a total of 87 members in the Parliament of Maldives. Parliament had recently amended its standing orders to make it easier to hand over an impeachment motion. Moreover, MDP Democrats together have 56 MPs. Of these, 43 MPs are from MDP and 13 are from Democrats. According to the Constitution and the standing orders of the Parliament, impeachment can be done against the President with 56 votes.

This makes it clear that if Muizzu does not accept the demands of the opposition, it is certain that he will lose his chair.

On the instructions of the Rajasthan government, the Autonomous Government Department issued orders to remove the employees serving even after retirement. But many departments, corporations and universities are kind to retired employees.

Why Rajasthan Government issue this order

If sources are to be believed, crores of rupees were being spent every month on retired employees and officers during the previous Congress government. When they were investigated, it came to light that the purpose for which they were kept was not being accomplished. This was discussed only after the first review meeting with the UDH Minister to remove retired employees and officers who were unnecessarily engaged.

Now their services are being terminated by issuing orders. Furthermore, during the previous government, a large number of retired officers and employees were deployed. They were deployed in the name of consultants in many bodies including UDH, DLB and JDA.

Moreover, chances for new recruitment of employees will be opened. It’s good news for candidates seeking jobs in the Rajasthan Government departments.

    Seat status in Bihar

The magic figure of 122 is required for any alliance to form a government in Bihar. BJP has 78 MLAs in Bihar Assembly which has 243 MLAs. Whereas four MLAs of Jitan Ram Manjhi’s party ‘Hum’ are also with him. In such a situation, the total strength of NDA is 82. JDU of Nitish Kumar has 45 MLAs. In such a situation, if they become a part of the NDA alliance, this number reaches 127. Which is 5 more than the figure of 122 required for the majority. That means there is no need to make many arrangements.

Talking about RJD, the party has a total of 79 MLAs in the assembly. Whereas from India Bloc, together with Congress and Left parties, this number reaches 114. Meaning 8 away from the majority mark. Congress has 19 seats and the Left has 16 seats. Hence they have to put efforts into forming the government.

  • Chabahar Port Project Agreement between India and Iran

Chabahar Port Project Agreement between India and Iran

The Chabahar Port Project is close to an agreement between India And Iran. During Foreign Minister Jaishanker’s visit to Tehran, he held extensive discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Chabahar port and North-South connectivity.

Amidst the tension with Pakistan, Iran has made preparations to defeat it on the diplomatic front also. Recently during Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Iran, both the countries have come close to an agreement on this ambitious Chabahar Port project. The issue of construction of this port has been pending between the two countries for a long time. It came into limelight in 2017 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tehran.

India has finalized the Chabahar Agreement at a time when the Middle East is going through great turmoil and relations between Iran and Pakistan are tense. Moreover, International Naval Trade Waterways are under threat such as Somalia Pirates and attack Houthi terrorists. The US and Britain are continuously attacking Houthi rebel positions in Yemen to eliminate disruptions to the smooth movement of commercial ships through the Red Sea.

What is the Chabahar Port Project?

Chabahar Port is a connectivity project located in Sistan Baluchistan province in the south-eastern part of Iran. In this project, Chahbahar Port has been developed in collaboration between India and Iran since 2003 in the Gulf of Oman.

It has two main ports, but India will develop only one of the two, namely Shaheed Beheshti Port. An investment agreement of $8 billion was signed between the two countries on this project. The Chabahar Port Project is a multinational initiative to develop a deep-sea port in southeast Iran and establish a key trade route connecting India, Iran, Afghanistan, and potentially Central Asia.

Plans have been drawn up to build a 628 km long railway line to Zahedan and then more than 1,000 km long tracks to Sirakhs on the Iran-Turkmenistan border.

Here’s a breakdown of its key aspects:

    Location and Significance:

    • Chabahar is Iran’s only oceanic port, offering crucial access to the Indian Ocean and beyond.
    • It’s considered a “Golden Gateway” to Afghanistan and Central Asia, as it provides an alternative to Pakistan-controlled routes for accessing these regions.

    Chabahar Port Project Elements:

    • Port Development: India has invested heavily in expanding Chabahar port’s capacity, with Phase 1 already operational and further phases planned.
    • Road and Rail Connectivity: India has built a 240-km road connecting Chabahar with Zaranj in Afghanistan. Moreover, Iran is constructing a crucial railway link between Chabahar and Zahedan.
    • Chabahar Special Economic Zone: Plans are underway to establish an industrial zone near the port. It includes facilities for aluminium smelting, urea production, and other industries.

    International Collaboration:

    • The project is a trilateral partnership between India, Iran, and Afghanistan. Each country is playing a critical role in its development and utilization.
    • The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) aims to integrate Chabahar into a broader trade network connecting Russia, India, and Central Asia.

    Challenges and Potential:

    • US sanctions on Iran: Sanctions have posed hurdles in terms of financing and international engagement.
    • Change of power in Afghanistan: The Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 added further uncertainty to the project’s future.
    • Despite these challenges, Chabahar holds immense potential as a hub for trade, regional cooperation, and economic development.

    Current Status:

    • Although progress has been slower than initially anticipated, the project continues to move forward.
    • India’s recent commitment to send aid to Afghanistan through Chabahar indicates continued interest in the initiative.
    • Iran’s efforts to complete the Chabahar-Zahedan railway are another positive development.

How the Chabahar Port Project will be beneficial

According to the Indian Commerce Ministry, freight transportation through the Chabahar Port and International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) will be 30% cheaper than the Mediterranean-Suez route. Natural gas from Central Asia can be brought to India through Chabahar port. India is already part of projects like the TAPI gas pipeline originating from the Central Asian Republic of Turkmenistan.

Moreover, the Chabahar project will end the dominance that China has created in the region regarding connectivity through the CPEC project with Pakistan.
