But just before Sunday’s vote, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced parliamentary immunity for four members of Muizzu’s cabinet. Decided to stop the clearance and issued a three-line red whip against them. MDP has the majority in Parliament.

The long-pending vote finally took place on Monday afternoon and Parliament rejected Haider, Shaheem and Usham. Haider was rejected by a vote of 46-24. Usham was rejected by a vote of 44-24 and Shaheem by 31-30. However, Sayeed narrowly got approval with a vote of 37-32.

According to the Constitution and the standing orders of the Parliament, impeachment can be done against the President with 56 votes.

Former Deputy Speaker and MP of Maldives Eva Abdullah, while confirming the suspension of the ministers, has said that the government should apologize to the people of India.
