After the spectacular victory of the Zoram People’s Movement in Mizoram, it is almost certain that party chief Lalduhoma will become the next CM of the state. IPS officer-turned-politician Lalduhoma is in the news everywhere after winning 27 seats in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly under his leadership.
In a multi-cornered contest, Lalduhoma defeated his nearest rival J. Malsawmzuala Vanchhawang retained his Serchhip seat by defeating the MNF candidate by a margin of 2,982 votes. After getting a strong mandate, he told the media that he would meet Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati. He may meet on Tuesday or Wednesday and stake claim to form the government.
Came into politics influenced by Indira Gandhi
Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer, served as security in charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and played a key role in the organizing committee of the 1982 Asian Games. Influenced by Indira Gandhi, Lalduhoma joined the Congress in 1984.
Lalduhoma was instrumental in bringing the Mizo National Front (MNF) into the mainstream and establishing peace in Mizoram. He said, “Indira Gandhi had entrusted me with the task of resolving the insurgency led by the Laldenga-led Mizo National Front. I met Laldenga in London where he was in self-exile. I persuaded them to come forward to end extremism”.
The Mizo peace accord was signed because of Lalduhoma
Due to the tireless efforts of Lalduhoma and on the initiative of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Mizo Peace Accord was signed in June 1986. Due to this, the conflict and rebellion that had been going on for two decades in Mizoram came to an end. Lalduhoma was elected MP from the Sole Lok Sabha seat of Mizoram as a Congress candidate. But after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, his rapport with the Congress party deteriorated. Therefore he left the Congress party. After this, he was disqualified under the anti-defection law in 1988.
Formed his party and won the trust of the people
After struggling for a few years, Lalduhoma formed the Zoram Nationalist Party in 1997. In 2003 he was elected MLA from Ratu’s seat. Ahead of the 2018 assembly elections, ZNM merged with six local parties to form ZPM. After that, this coalition group supported him as its chief ministerial candidate. ZPM has emerged as a strong third front in Mizoram’s dual-party electoral battle, performing well in local elections. He aims to replace Congress and MNF Mizoram, accusing both parties of doing nothing for the betterment of the state and its people during their four decades in power.
