    According to local media reports, parliament voted to refuse to sanction Housing Minister Ali Haider Ahmed, Islamic Minister Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. At the same time, Economic Minister Mohammad Sayeed narrowly escaped and was approved. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made the formal request for approval of his cabinet on November 20, two days after taking office.

    Parliament was scheduled to vote on the cabinet on December 18, but the original report of the government monitoring committee was rejected. Parliament convened a meeting on Sunday to vote on the committee’s new report, which was passed on 30 December. But just before Sunday’s vote, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced parliamentary immunity for four members of Muizzu’s cabinet. Decided to stop the clearance and issued a three-line red whip against them. MDP has the majority in Parliament.

    The move triggered clashes between pro-government and opposition MPs, disrupting the parliamentary sitting proceedings. The long-pending vote finally took place on Monday afternoon and Parliament rejected Haider, Shaheem and Usham. Haider was rejected by a vote of 46-24. Usham was rejected by a vote of 44-24 and Shaheem by 31-30. However, Sayeed narrowly got approval with a vote of 37-32.

Now if Muizzu does not apologize, he will have to lose his post.

    There are a total of 87 members in the Parliament of Maldives. Parliament had recently amended its standing orders to make it easier to hand over an impeachment motion. Moreover, MDP Democrats together have 56 MPs. Of these, 43 MPs are from MDP and 13 are from Democrats. According to the Constitution and the standing orders of the Parliament, impeachment can be done against the President with 56 votes.
