The 81st Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced on Monday, 11th December 2023. The Globe Globe Awards are recognizing films and television shows released in 2023. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” led the pack with nine and eight nominations respectively.

The Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 7th January 2024. Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony. Certainly, it will be interesting to see who takes home the golden trophies!

The Golden Globe Nominations were announced by Helen Hoehne, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). This organization votes on the Golden Globe Awards.

The HFPA has been under fire in recent years for its lack of diversity and ethical lapses. However, the organization has made changes to address these issues.

The nominees and winners are chosen by a voting body of 300 members from 75 countries.

Golden Globe Nominations Categories

The 2024 Golden Globe Nominations will include 27 categories across film and TV. Moreover, Two new categories are being introduced.

Golden Globe Nominations for Movies

The following movies nominated for Golden Globe Awards are in the tight race.

Barbie

The live-action Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Altogether, surprisingly led the pack with nine nominations. Moreover, nominations are for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, and Best Actress for Robbie.

Oppenheimer: 

Christopher Nolan’s biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, followed closely with eight nominations. Especially including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Nolan, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

Killers of the Flower Moon: 

Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited adaptation of David Grann’s true crime novel about the murders of Osage Nation members in the 1920s. Oklahoma received seven nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Scorsese, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Poor Things: 

Poor Things is a 2023 black comedy fantasy film. It’s based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. The film was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara. It stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s dark comedy about a woman who is reincarnated with the brain of a baby also garnered seven nominations. Moreover, it includes Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Original Screenplay.

Golden Globe Nominations for Television Shows

“Succession” dominated the television categories with nine nominations, including one for Best Drama Series. Other top contenders include “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Crown,” and “The Last of Us.” Moreover, in the acting categories, Zendaya, Bill Hader, Steve Martin, Martin Freeman, and Amanda Seyfried were among the nominees.

Succession:

The final season of HBO’s hit drama about a dysfunctional media family dominated the television nominations with nine nods. Further, it includes Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Jeremy Strong, and Best Supporting Actress for Sarah Snook.

The Bear:

FX’s gritty comedy about a young chef struggling to run his family’s Chicago sandwich shop received five nominations. Further, it includes Best Comedy Series, Best Actor for Jeremy Allen White, and Best Supporting Actress for Ayo Edebiri.

Only Murders in the Building:

Hulu’s charming mystery-comedy about three New York City neighbours who investigate a death in their building also scored five nominations, including Best Comedy Series, Best Actress for Selena Gomez, and Best Supporting Actor for Steve Martin.

A new category for “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” was introduced this year. It is for recognizing films that were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. This time nominees in this category include “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

2 Best stand-up comedian on television: 

This category is been introduced to recognize outstanding work by a comedian. This time the nominees for this category are Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.

Surprising and interesting

Most important is that 27 nominations for the Golden Globe Awards are from the Walt Disney Company.

Barbie received 9 nominations, including 3 for Best Original Song. Surprisingly this is the second time in Golden Globe history that three songs from a given film were nominated for Best Original Song. The last time this happened was with Aladdin in 1992.

Taylor Shift’s Eras Tour’s nomination for the Globes’ new category award is surprising. One of their rules seemed to prohibit it, but another rule superseded the first one.

All six nominees for best original score were non-American composers. Did you know that this year’s nominees have made history? For the first time since 2006, all nominees were born outside of the U.S. Isn’t that amazing? It just goes to show how diverse and talented the world is!
